Hornby Model Trains

Hornby Model Trains is a company that has quite an extensive history which involves all of the trials and tribulations that are a part of an effort to become a successful business enterprise.  With its roots in the United Kingdom, this company met the challenges which were present during the 1920’s as electric trains were not developed at a very proficient level during this time period.

The response to this problem was their introduction of the O scale mechanical train. Several years later, this scale was set aside, and what we now know as the 00 scale was offered to hobbyist, and this model train was the introduction of one of the very first electric model trains offered to the hobbyist.  Much to the satisfaction of Hornby, this scale produced an initial level of success but, in spite of this early success it was unfortunately short lived.

As with any market the industry became much more competitive by the 50’s and 60’s and Hornby Model Trains began to experience what were to become serious financial problems. This would inevitably lead to more than one merger that more than likely and to the dismay of the owners included a merger with one of Hornby’s more serious rival competitors. It wasn’t until the 1980’s that this company got a legitimate breath of new life through what was a management buy out, and this would and has kept the Hornby model train company financially solvent since that time.
