Model Scale Trains-A Rewarding Pastime

Model scale trains is just another way of describing a hobby which is undeniably one of the more rewarding pastimes that you can choose to become involved in, and that is the hobby of model railroading. In selecting a hobby, one of the more important qualifiers which has to be met is the hobbies ability to help you forget the world around you, and this one certainly accomplishes that and many times over.

While it certainly may be true that there is a great deal of new jargon to learn and technical information that has to be digested and put to use, this is in no way a detriment, because these are the very pastimes that will cause you to lose track of time.

Moreover, the whole point of becoming committed to a hobby like this is to have a hobby that not only has it’s own unique therapeutic value, but is also an endeavor that will consume months and years to bring to fruition. Building your own model railroading empire should be something which should take a certain amount of time, and frankly there really isn’t any justifiable reason for there to be limitations for your layouts size either other than the amount of space that you may have available.

Still, there is even a way around the problem of limited space and this relates directly to the type of model scale trains you decide to build your layout around. If there is a problem, it is that many new hobbyist confuse the difference between scale and gauge and this is easily resolved with the following definitions:

Scale: Scale is the relative difference in size that is measured in fractional for when comparing the model to it’s real life prototype. For example the HO model train is 1/87th the size of the real life train.

Gauge: This is the measurement take from the inside of one rail track to the inside of the opposite rail track.

Not overly complicated but many people confuse the two. With this knowledge, you are now well armed to go about the business of selecting a particular scale for your model train layout. You may even want to mix up scales for your layout to add variety which will also create another dynamic that will make your railroad empire more entertaining and interesting for yourself and anyone you care to share your hobby with.

And this is only the beginning, because if you happen to be handy with hand tools you can have your own little, or big if you so choose, carpentry project if you decide to build your own benchwork, which is the platform that you place your model train layout on.

If you happen to have an artistic side to your personality you’ll enjoy many rewarding hours creating the model train scenery that surrounds your track layout. This can involve the creation of mountains, rivers, streams, cities, towns, and various types of structures, and anything else that you can think of to add to the scenery for your model railroading empire. Your only limited by your imagination and most of the supplies that you’ll need are right around the house.
