Model Train Plans-What This Really Entails

When we refer to the descriptive phrase model train plans, it can actually express more than one possibility. It can refer specifically to the creation of your model train track plans, or it can apply to all of the elements which represent your model railroad layout.

Building your model train layout involves many things, and if your new to this hobby, your interest in this amazingly rewarding pastime would be best served if you were to invest a reasonable amount of time studying all of the aspects that you will become involved in before you begin the construction of your layout.

A natural tendency would be to first begin by selecting the type of scale train you would like to work with. However, it would be much wiser to realistically evaluate the amount of real space you have available in which to build your layout. If you choose one of the larger scales, your ability to use your space may have limitations, and you may not be able to fully realize the layout you envisioned initially.

After determining the location and the amount of space you have to construct your layout in, you’ll have a much easier time in selecting from one of the many scales which are available.

Before anything else can be done you’ll need to construct or purchase a benchwork to place your layout on. You can do something as simple as placing a 4’x8’ piece of plywood on sawhorses, or you can build an elaborate bench work which is supported by braces. It could very well be that undertaking a do it yourself project like this is something that your not interested in.

If this is the case, there is no cause for concern because there are also ready made bench works which one can purchase that come in various sizes shapes. What you choose to do will most likely depend on the time you have for a project of this type, and your skill level. In the end this decision like anything else is one of personal preference.

At this point, determining exactly how you would like to design your track plans would be the next task to complete.
The internet is an excellent source for information about track plans, and you’ll discover that there are a number of sites which make free downloadable plans available. You’ll also discover while doing your research, that there is also software that you can purchase for varying prices which will design your track plans as well.

One other possibility which can be very rewarding is to build your layout completely from scratch. This will, of course, be more labor intense and involve more time to complete, but the final result will certainly promote a sense of accomplishment, and you’ll also know that your design is original and most likely not to be found anywhere else.

One cannot say enough about the creation of scenery for your layout because this is what will bring your model train layout to life, and tie everything together. You may want to begin this creative process by choosing an era which your layout will represent. Is it going to be based on a contemporary setting, or about a time from the past? You’ll want to include mountainous regions, lakes, streams, bridges, cities, rural towns, villages, backdrops, lighting, people, animals, and anything else that your imagination will allow.

A reasonable investment of time in pre-planning your layout will ultimately result in a successful approach to model railroading, and at the very least prevent you from making many of the common mistakes most new hobbyist experience.
